6 to 10-year-old students tell teacher they don't want to do anything when they grow up—they just want to make money: 'Lots of people get money without working.'

Is it normal for kids not to want to do anything when they grow up?

When you were a kid, what did you say you wanted to be when you grew up? A lot of little kids want to be doctors, police officers, parents, nurses, and firefighters, because those are the only jobs that they know. As they get older, they might branch out into more intellectual professional pursuits, such as becoming scientists, lawyers, or writers. I know I wanted to be a writer when I was 10 years old, and look at me now! A lot of kids want to have pie-in-the-sky professions, like being a Broadway actor or an MLB superstar, even though it's unrealistic for them to have those careers as adults. 

If you have kids in your life, it's probably not worth your time to freak out if your kid says they want to be something unrealistic when they grow up. Chances are, they'll eventually find their career path, and what they want to be at age 6 isn't what they'll be at age 36. 

One teacher was alarmed to learn that her students, ages 6 to 10, had no career aspirations. They all aspired to live off passive incomes. Do you think this is unusual? Or have kids always wanted to be rich without doing work at that age?
